Two boys, both 17 years old and from Guelph, Ont., have been charged with second-degree murder following the death of another teen who was hit by a minivan in Centre Wellington Township last weekend.
The arrests were made on Friday, six days after the tragic incident occurred on Wellington Road 29, just south of the Eramosa-Garafraxa Town line – a rural area located north of Guelph – according to a release from Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) issued on Saturday.
The accident took place shortly after midnight on September 19, when emergency services arrived in response to reports of a pedestrian being struck by a minivan. A 16-year-old boy from Puslinch Township was transported to the hospital but unfortunately died there.
The driver of the minivan stayed at the scene and reported no injuries, according to police.
The names of the two boys cannot be disclosed due to provisions under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Wellington County OPP are continuing their investigation into the collision. Anyone who has information is encouraged to come forward.
