A new financial aid program aims to help vulnerable residents of Oshawa access day programs more easily.

Recently, the OSCC 55+ (Oshawa Senior Community Centres) announced a new subsidy initiative supported by Solara Health Partners. This program will enable seniors and their families to join adult day programs (including transportation) at a lower cost.

According to its website, the OSCC 55+ states that its adult day programs-featuring exercise, mental activities, music, games, and special events-offer a “safe and supportive” space for older adults dealing with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, or other chronic issues.

“Participants benefit from meaningful activities, exercise, and social interaction, supported by trained and compassionate staff. At the same time, caregivers gain valuable respite knowing their loved one is well cared for,” the website reads.

The OSCC 55+ mentioned that the subsidy will help cover both program fees and transportation costs. This will lessen financial barriers and allow more seniors to take part regularly. Consequently, this also provides caregivers with additional relief.

For the Links2Wellbeing: Social Prescribing for Older Adults program, eligible candidates might include individuals experiencing loneliness symptoms, social isolation, caregiver burnout, loss of a spouse, or those who are new to the area. A referral from a healthcare provider is necessary; the subsidy could potentially cover up to 100 percent of membership fees along with two programs per person every quarter (session).

To qualify for an OSCC55+ leisure program subsidy-which includes continuing education classes and special events-applicants must have a total household income below the low-income cut-off threshold (proof is required).

This subsidy may cover up to 100 percent of membership fees and one program per person each quarter (session).

To be eligible for community support services subsidies-including access to day programs, transportation options and footcare services-the applicant must have a total family income not exceeding 25 percent above the low-income cut-off threshold.

The subsidy might cover up to 100 percent of membership fees (if applicable) as well as one service or program per person each quarter.
