Tornado alerts have been issued for almost a dozen communities in Ontario after three twisters were reported on Tuesday evening.

Environment Canada had issued an early warning, but updated it just before 7 p. m., stating that the first tornado was spotted over Burgessville, approximately 85 kilometers west of Hamilton.

A second tornado was observed in Springford, which is about 15 kilometers from Burgessville.

The tornado is “moving quickly to the east” at a speed of 80 km/h, according to the weather agency.

Communities affected by the tornado include:

Norwich. Otterville. Princeton. Teeterville. Burford. Scotland. Waterford. County of Brant. Brantford.

A third tornado has also been reported in Northern Peterborough County near Alpine Village, moving east at 65 km/h with winds between 90 km/h and 110 km/h.

Areas potentially impacted include:

Mississagua Landing. Wolf Island Provincial Park. Burleigh Falls. Kawartha Highlands Signature Site Park.

“This is a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation,” the weather agency warns.

If threatening weather approaches, take cover immediately in a basement, an interior room, or a sturdy shelter. If there’s no available shelter, lie down in a low area and protect your head from flying debris.

If you’re on the water when bad weather strikes, head back to shore and seek shelter if possible. Otherwise, move away from the path of the tornado to get to safety. Wear your lifejacket and lie face down while protecting your head.

Editor’s note: this story is still developing; initially only two tornadoes were reported.
