Numerous weather alerts were active across parts of southern Ontario on Tuesday evening as strong thunderstorms passed through the area, leading Environment Canada to caution about possible tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail.

Tornado warnings were issued for regions including Brantford and the County of Brant, Simcoe-Delhi-Norfolk, and Woodstock-Tillsonburg-Oxford County.

Chief meteorologist Anthony Farnell stated there is “potential for quick tornado spin ups as this quickly passes through. Also widespread 90-100 km/h straight line winds,” as the severe storm moved over London, Ont., in the late afternoon.

“Numerous tornado warnings were issued across a large portion of southwest Ontario between 5 and 7 p. m. and these storms are now heading towards the Niagara Region,” Farnell added.

“Along with likely isolated tornadoes (no reports of damage so far) there is also widespread straight-line winds that could gust as high as 130 km/h.”

Communities in the path of the storm include Norwich, Otterville, Princeton, Teeterville, Burford, Scotland, Waterford and Brantford.

Environment Canada warned of wind gusts between 90 and 110 km/h, along with ping pong ball-sized hail.

“This is a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation,” the agency said, urging residents to seek shelter immediately in a basement, interior room or sturdy building.

The alerts come as severe thunderstorms moved across much of southern Ontario Tuesday evening, while some areas remained unaffected.

“The heat and humidity breaks across the region tonight,” he said.

Citizens are encouraged to keep an eye on alerts and forecasts as storms progress through the province.
