Unifor is very worried about the layoffs of personal support workers (PSWs) at Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital, especially as this fits into a larger trend of changes happening in hospitals across Ontario.

Unifor Local 302 represents 27 PSWs at the hospital who have been given layoff notices.

Although the employer has stated plans to bring in more registered practical nurses (RPNs), these new hires won’t nearly balance out the loss of PSWs. PSWs are vital for quality patient care and offer essential, hands-on support to maintain the dignity, safety, and quality of life for patients every single day.

The impact of these layoffs will add more pressure on already stretched health care workers and raises serious worries about patient care, burnout, and workplace safety.

Every role in our hospitals is important, and PSWs are a key part of the care team.

Unifor will keep meeting with affected members to offer support and resist decisions that harm both workers and the health care system that people in Ontario depend on.
