MISSISSAUGA, ONT. – Ontario’s Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Rob Flack has issued a Notice of Decision to approve the City of Mississauga’s new Official Plan.

According to a release, this means Mississauga Official Plan 2051 is now in effect, replacing the former plan and amendments.

It also means all new development applications will now be required to be consistent with the new plan.

The city says the policies in the new plan aim to:

Encourage more housing by allowing permissions for more than 370,000 new residential units city-wide by 2051, including more housing along transit corridors and gentle density in neighbourhoods. Create more mixed-use communities. Support job and economic growth by allowing for a broader range of uses in key employment areas, while protecting industrial uses from residential conversion. Enhance transportation options by expanding infrastructure for walking, cycling and transit. Strengthen environmental, cultural and heritage protections.

It also outlines where development should occur and how essential services, infrastructure and amenities will come together, the release notes.

Under the Ontario Planning Act, the City is required to review and update its Official Plan every 10 years. It was adopted by council on April 16, 2025 and was then submitted to the province for approval.

A final, consolidated version of the plan will be posted on the city’s Official Plan website in the coming weeks.
