York Regional Police Chief Jim Mac Sween is addressing community anger over the police response to a violent home invasion that resulted in the death of 46-year-old Abdul Aleem Farooqi.
Around 1 a. m. on Aug. 31, officers were dispatched to the Farooqi home in Vaughan following reports of a break-in. Upon arrival, they found Farooqi with severe injuries and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
City News initially reported that Farooqi was killed in front of his children during the invasion.
In a statement released on Friday, Chief Mac Sween described Farooqi’s murder as “heinous” and “disgusting.”
“My heart goes out to all grappling with the violent murder of a husband, son, father, brother, friend, and leader,” said Mac Sween.
The Chief also responded to criticism regarding earlier comments he made about not confronting armed intruders.
“It was suggested as a tactic in the hopes of preserving lives,” said Mac Sween. “When it comes to defending property, material items can be replaced – but lives cannot.”

Concerns Over Police Response Time
Mac Sween further addressed what he called “inaccurate reports” about how long it took for police to arrive at the Farooqi residence after receiving the emergency call. While some claims suggest it took up to 13 minutes for officers to reach the scene, the Chief insists that’s not accurate. “Officers were en route within 40 seconds of receiving the call and arrived on scene within 4.5 minutes,” he said. No arrests related to Farooqi’s homicide have been made as of now.Source link
