Local counties and health groups are urging people to get ready for emergencies as part of Emergency Preparedness Week.

This year’s week is from May 3-9, and Huron Perth Public Health is one of the organizations emphasizing that everyone can contribute to emergency readiness.

Some helpful tips include understanding the risks of emergencies in your area. In Midwestern Ontario, potential risks may consist of extreme heat, extreme cold, air quality issues like wildfire smoke, flooding, severe storms, tornadoes, and infectious diseases.

Residents are also advised to create an emergency plan for their entire family, including pets, covering different types of emergencies. This plan should include having an emergency kit with essential supplies such as bottled water, non-perishable food items, hygiene products, a flashlight, radio, first aid kit, backup phone charger, and cash.

During an emergency situation, you might be without electricity or tap water. It’s wise to be prepared to care for yourself and your family for at least 72 hours.
