Counties and health organizations are urging everyone to get ready for emergencies during Emergency Preparedness Week.

This week takes place from May 3-9 this year, and Huron Perth Public Health is one of the groups reminding us that everyone can help in getting prepared for unexpected situations.

Some suggestions include understanding the types of emergencies that could happen in your area. In Midwestern Ontario, these might involve extreme heat, severe cold, air quality issues like wildfire smoke, flooding, heavy storms, tornadoes, and infectious diseases.

It’s also a good idea to create an emergency plan for your entire family, including pets, covering various possible emergencies. This includes having an emergency kit with essential items like bottled water, non-perishable food, hygiene products, a flashlight, radio, first aid supplies, a backup phone charger, and some cash.

During an emergency situation, you might lose power or access to tap water. Be ready to look after yourself and your family for at least 72 hours.

For more details on assembling a kit, check out www. getprepared. gc. ca.
