A hospital in eastern Ontario has announced the temporary closure of its obstetrics department due to staffing shortages.

The Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital reported that the unit at its Smiths Falls location closed on Thursday and is set to reopen on October 10.

The hospital stated it is collaborating with other local hospitals, ambulance services, and families to ensure necessary support is available during this time.

The facility had previously closed its emergency department in Perth for three weeks back in July due to similar staffing challenges.

Emergency departments across the province have experienced closures lasting hours or even days recently, mainly because of a shortage of nurses.

The impact of these closures has been felt more by rural hospitals compared to urban ones.
