Two men in their 20s have tragically died following a possible drowning incident just northeast of Peterborough, Ont., on Sunday, according to provincial police.

Peterborough police received a report just before 5 p. m. that two individuals had gone missing in the water at Burleigh Falls in Stony Lake, which is about 30 kilometres from Peterborough, as stated by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in a news release on Monday.

The two men were reportedly swimming when one fell from the shoreline and seemed to be struggling, police said. Others nearby jumped into the water to help, leading to a second person going missing.

Rescue teams from Peterborough police and fire searched the water and its surroundings on Sunday but were unable to find the two missing individuals, according to the OPP.

On Monday, the OPP’s underwater search and recovery unit found and retrieved their bodies.

A 24-year-old man from Caledon and a 26-year-old man from Brampton were pronounced dead at the scene, police reported. More details about the victims were not provided in the release.
