Ontario’s Police Watchdog is looking into a crash that happened in northern Simcoe on Wednesday, leaving a 77-year-old woman with serious injuries and requiring hospital treatment.
Officers from the Norfolk County detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police were called to the scene of a collision involving a police cruiser and a Honda CRV at the intersection of Norfolk Street North – also known as Highway 24 – and Riverside Road.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) reports that around 1:30 p. m., an OPP officer was driving south on Norfolk Street North while responding to a call.
At the Riverside Road intersection, the officer’s cruiser collided with the Honda CRV.
The police officer suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital, while the woman driving the CRV was airlifted to Hamilton General Hospital for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The SIU has activated its mandate, which occurs whenever there’s a significant injury involving police.
