The holiday season brought some good news for T. A. Brown Funeral Home in Port Elgin, Ont., as two sets of cremated remains that were taken during a break-in about a week ago have been returned safely.

The owner of the funeral home, Taylor Brown, couldn’t share details about how the remains were returned but mentioned it happened on Wednesday.

“We are very grateful to be able to reunite these families with their loved ones’ cremated remains,” said Brown.

Saugeen Shores police reported that the remains were returned anonymously, and it’s unclear if the person who returned them was involved in the Dec. 14 break-in.

“It was suspected that the responsible person, or persons, were unaware what they had stolen, as the cremated remains were contained in non-descript boxes,” police said in a release.

“Hopefully this brings closure to the families already grieving the loss of a loved one,” said Chief of Police Kevin Zettel. “This is especially magnified during the Christmas season,” he added.

The investigation is still ongoing, and anyone with information regarding this incident can contact 519-832-2500 or report anonymously to Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
