Residents of Markham will have the opportunity to lend a hand in greening their city this spring, as thousands of trees and shrubs are set to be planted during several volunteer events in May.

The environmental organization 10,000 Trees for the Rouge has revealed its spring planting schedule for 2026, which includes three key events throughout Markham aimed at introducing over 6,000 trees and shrubs into local parks and conservation areas.

The biggest event is planned for Milne Dam Conservation Park on May 3, where volunteers will plant 5,000 trees and shrubs. Organizers are seeking around 1,250 volunteers to assist during morning and afternoon sessions.

A setup day is scheduled for May 2 from 8 a. m. to noon, followed by training for experienced volunteers in the afternoon.

<p Participants at the Milne Dam event can enjoy a complimentary barbecue lunch and explore “Discovery Alley,” an environmental information fair featuring groups like the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, Markham Public Library, LEAF, and Rouge National Urban Park.

Two additional planting days are planned for May 16 at Berczy Park North where 700 trees and shrubs will be planted, and on May 30 at Austin Drive Park where another 450 will be added.

Advance registration through Eventbrite is required for all events, with limited spots available on a first-come, first-served basis. Youth under the age of 18 must attend with adult supervision.

Founded in 1989, 10,000 Trees for the Rouge is a volunteer-driven non-profit dedicated to restoring natural habitats within the Rouge Valley watershed. They have successfully restored over 270 acres of sensitive watershed land while supporting wildlife corridors and protecting local streams from erosion.

Their annual planting efforts have become one of the region’s largest volunteer initiatives focused on environmental issues, regularly attracting thousands of participants each year.
