Peterborough OPP is looking into two similar cases where people have been tricked out of their skid steer loaders.
On February 11, 2026, Peterborough County OPP got a call from someone saying they had sold a skid steer and received a fake cheque as payment.
The caller, who lives in Selwyn Township, mentioned that they had posted the skid steer loader for sale on an online site.
A buyer reached out, claiming to be from a business and expressed interest in purchasing it. They agreed on a pick-up date and time.
On February 1, 2026, a black pickup truck showed up at the scheduled time, and the driver handed over a cheque for the amount discussed.
Not long after, the caller realized that the cheque was fake and could no longer contact the buyer.
The skid steer involved was a 2024 CFMoto Skid Steer Loader, model CFG KRW232, valued at more than $14,000.
Then on March 4, 2026, Peterborough County OPP received another report from a business in Otonabee-South Monaghan Township about a similar situation.
The caller explained that they had arranged for the sale of a skid steer loader over the phone with someone who sent them a cheque.
On February 25, 2026 at around 2 p. m., a flatbed tow truck came to collect the skid steer and take it to Scarborough.
Lately, the business found out that there weren’t enough funds in the account linked to the cheque. Attempts to reach out to the buyer failed since their number had been disconnected.
The skid steer here was identified as a 2015 CAT 259D Compact Track Loader with an estimated value of about $45,000.
