Environment Canada has issued a snow squall watch, predicting between 30 to 50 centimetres of snow in the Waterloo region, Guelph, and Wellington County.
Snow squalls are expected to start Thursday morning and might last into the weekend. Visibility could be near zero at times.
“Make sure you’re taking extra precautions if you’re heading out on the roads,” said Environment Canada meteorologist Steven Flisfeder. “So keeping safe distance, giving yourself extra time to get to where you’re going to travel.”
The weather agency warns that travel may become dangerous, and some routes might be impassable. Road closures could also happen.
A special weather statement regarding gusty winds up to 80 km/h has been released for the Waterloo region, Guelph, and Wellington County.
According to Environment Canada’s statement, southwest winds will change direction Wednesday night to west, then shift northwest Thursday afternoon or evening.
Environment Canada cautions that strong winds may toss around loose objects and lead to local power outages. The winds should die down by Friday.
