After attracting large crowds during its first year, Chinese Heritage Month is back in Markham and York Region this February with an even richer lineup of events highlighting Chinese culture, history, and community spirit.

This month-long celebration is once again led by committee chair and Markham Regional Coun. Joe Li, with support from Mayor Frank Scarpitti and several council members. The aim is to highlight the diversity and significance of Chinese Canadian contributions through various performances, workshops, and cultural programs throughout the region.

As honorary chair, Mayor Scarpitti expressed his pride that Markham was the first city in Canada to officially declare February as Chinese Heritage Month – a milestone he feels has inspired other municipalities to do the same.

“It reflects who we are as a city,” he often remarks, noting the vital role Chinese Canadians have played in shaping Markham’s development.

This year features an expanded list of cultural partners including the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto, the Toronto Chinese Orchestra, and the Wayland Li Wushu Academy. They’re helping to widen the variety of performances, demonstrations, and hands-on activities available.

Li mentions that the goal is straightforward: build on last year’s success and continue fostering connections.

“Chinese Heritage Month is about sharing culture and bringing people together,” he said. “We want residents of all backgrounds to feel welcome, learn something new, and celebrate with us.”

Thursday, Feb. 5, 7 to 9 p. m.

Flato Markham Theatre, 171 Town Centre Blvd.

The month kicks off on stage with an exciting showcase featuring lion dances and dragon dances along with traditional Chinese dance performances, wushu demonstrations, and local singers. Even council members-including the mayor and co-chairs-are expected to join in for a performance themselves. The God of Fortune will also make a guest appearance to bring good luck for the upcoming year.

Saturday, Feb. 14, 11 a. m. to 5 p. m.

Milliken Mills Community Centre, 7600 Kennedy Rd.

Families can enjoy free consultations on traditional Chinese medicine as well as calligraphy workshops and art sessions. There will be cultural presentations like tea demonstrations alongside fun activities for kids. The day will also feature seminars focusing on soccer while showcasing contributions from Canadian athletes of Chinese descent.

Thursday, Feb. 26, 11 a. m. to 1 p. m.

York Region Council Chambers, 17250 Yonge St.

This regional celebration includes lion dances along with instrumental performances from China followed by a complimentary lunch. This public event invites residents from across York Region to unite in honoring their heritage while celebrating community pride.

All events are free for everyone; however tickets are necessary for the Grand Opening Ceremony due to limited seating availability. For more details regarding additional programs or inquiries please contact Regional Coun. Joe Li at Joeli@markham. ca or call 416-505-7258; you can also reach out to co-chairs like Deputy Mayor Michael Chan or Ward Couns Ritch Lau (Ward 2), Amanda Yeung Collucci (Ward 6), Isa Lee (Ward 8).
