A 37-year-old man has been found guilty of manslaughter for his involvement in the death of a woman from Markham, Ont., during a notorious staged home invasion in 2010.

David Mylvaganam, the last individual to be sentenced in this case, received a life sentence from Superior Court Justice Michelle Fuerst in Newmarket on April 8 for his role in the murder-for-hire scheme orchestrated by Jennifer Pan aimed at killing her father.

Mylvaganam acknowledged that he was part of the plan.

Pan, who entered a guilty plea for manslaughter in March, confessed that she hired hitmen to shoot her father Hann Pan but stated that she never meant for her mother Bich Ha Pan to be killed.

Both parents were shot during the attack inside their home in Markham, located north of Toronto. The shooting resulted in Pan’s mother losing her life and left her father with a serious head injury.

This murder conspiracy inspired both a book and a Netflix documentary, capturing attention globally.

An earlier agreed statement revealed that Mylvaganam was recruited to help execute the plan.

According to defense attorney Jack Gemmell, Mylvaganam feels remorseful. He expressed his apologies to the Pan family during sentencing last week.

In 2015, a jury convicted Pan of first-degree murder and attempted murder related to the attack. Her three co-accused-Daniel Wong, Lenford Crawford, and Mylvaganam-were found guilty on similar charges. Wong was formerly her boyfriend.

The Supreme Court ruled in April 2025 that new first-degree murder trials should occur for all four defendants involved but upheld their convictions for attempted murder.

Pan arranged for parents’ deaths

On November 8, 2010, three armed intruders broke into the Pan family home in Markham. They took both parents into the basement before shooting them. Jennifer Pan was tied up on an upstairs banister with shoelaces and was initially seen as one of the victims of this home invasion.

The Crown successfully argued during trial that due to her troubled relationship with her parents, Pan had arranged their murders.

However, Ontario’s Court of Appeal later mandated new trials regarding first-degree murder convictions for all accused individuals involved.

The court ruled that there had been an error when suggesting only two possible scenarios-the intention was either to kill both parents or conduct a home invasion where they ended up being shot-in front of jurors.

The Appeal Court noted that second-degree murder and manslaughter verdicts should have been options presented about the death of Pan’s mother.

The Crown appealed this decision at Supreme Court level which confirmed new first-degree murder trials would take place as ordered by lower courts.

Cohorts face lesser charges after retrial

Differently through separate trials, Wong received conviction under lesser charge as manslaughter while Crawford pled guilty concerning conspiracy towards committing homicide.

A document read aloud indicated Wong connected up with Crawford eventually leading him engage Eric Carty’s assistance.

Carty subsequently roped Mylvaganam into assisting carry out intended crime.

Court heard stories depicting Carty being considerably older than others alongside having lengthy criminal background.
