Ontario Provincial Police report that a 73-year-old pilot who didn’t return to Oshawa, Ont., after flying a home-built plane last week was discovered deceased.

Authorities say the pilot’s remains were located following extensive search efforts in the city of Kawartha Lakes.

A large-scale search operation began on Friday after the plane left Oshawa Executive Airport at 8:30 a. m. and failed to arrive back by 9:30 a. m. that same morning.

Police mention that debris from the aircraft was recovered on Monday from Wolfe Lake in Queen Elizabeth II Wildlands Provincial Park within the Kawartha Lakes area.

On Tuesday, searchers found the submerged aircraft in Wolfe Lake and confirmed that the pilot had passed away.

Authorities stated that investigators are coordinating a plan for extracting the plane.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada announced it will send a team of investigators near Minden Hills, Ont., to look into an incident involving a privately registered small aircraft.

Durham regional police have identified the missing man as David but only by his first name and noted he was an experienced pilot who typically flew around areas south of Kawartha Lakes and north of Lake Scugog.

Police have described the aircraft as being blue and yellow and home-built with “FOFZ” marked on its tail.

This report by The Canadian Press was first Aug. 18, 2026.
