A representative from the civilian law enforcement agency gave an update on Monday about the officials’ designation. No further details were shared as the investigation continues.

The SIU investigates incidents involving police where death, serious injury, firearm discharge at a person, or sexual assault happens. On Feb. 21, they announced they would look into a police shooting at a home on the Bruce Saugeen Townline.

During this incident, officers fired their weapon and consequently, a 48-year-old man was declared dead, according to the SIU’s news release at that time.

Initial reports indicated that throughout the day on Feb. 21, the man allegedly committed several motor vehicle thefts and residential break-ins across various areas, including stealing a firearm, stated the SIU in its news release.

As events unfolded throughout the day, police made multiple attempts to find the man. He was spotted in the afternoon driving a stolen vehicle. A tire deflation device was used which caused the stolen vehicle to veer off-road; then he ran away on foot as noted in the release.

The man was found near Side Road 13 and Bruce-Saugeen Townline. There was an encounter between him and law enforcement outside a residence where an officer discharged his weapon and struck him, according to SIU reports.

Life-saving efforts were initiated immediately before he was taken to hospital where he was later pronounced deceased by medical staff as stated by SIU officials.

A separate announcement from South Bruce OPP mentioned that around 5:50 p. m. on Feb. 21; officers tried to arrest someone involved in various incidents earlier that day across South Bruce and Huron County.

The OPP Emergency Response Team along with Canine Unit located this individual at a residence situated on Bruce-Saugeen Townline in Kincardine Municipality. During their interaction with him while attempting an arrest; police fired their weapon resulting in his death as per information provided by OPP’s release statement.

Since SIU had invoked its authority over this situation; OPP will refrain from releasing additional details as confirmed by South Bruce OPP’s statement.

Lately during that same afternoon around 4:44 p. m., West Region OPP shared via social media that Bruce Saugeen Townline had been shut down between Side Road 10 and J & I Side Road which is close to North Bruce community south of Port Elgin due to heavy police activity prompting motorists for alternate routes planning ahead of travel needs.
