A city in Ontario is experiencing a major weather situation that’s lasted over a month, with teams working hard to manage record-breaking snowfall and restricted roadways.

The City of Barrie announced that it has been under a significant weather event since Dec. 28, 2025, making this the longest ongoing declaration in the city’s history.

The “high” level alert remains active as of Wednesday afternoon as crews strive to restore winter maintenance standards and ensure road safety.

As of now, Barrie has recorded around 300 centimetres of snow from Nov. 1, 2025, to Jan. 28, 2026, which is more than 9.5 feet.

While snow removal continues on main roads, collector roads, tight curb lanes and on-street cycling paths, the city warns that maintenance may take longer than usual.

In neighborhoods, contracted crews are clearing snow piles from cul-de-sacs, while city staff say they are addressing visibility issues where snowbanks are tall.

The significant weather event won’t be lifted until all narrowed roads and cycling lanes have been fully addressed according to their latest alert.

Residents are reminded that overnight parking on city streets isn’t allowed between 12:01 a. m. and 7 a. m., and between 3 a. m. and 6 a. m. in downtown areas from Dec. 1 through March 31.

City officials also suggest residents clear flat areas next to or at the end of driveways for garbage, recycling and organics carts while keeping them out of the way of snow removal equipment.

The city says it will provide updates if there are any further changes or impacts.
