Police in Hamilton Arrest 32 in Retail Theft Case

A recent investigation by Hamilton Police into organized retail theft has led to 32 individuals facing a total of 235 criminal charges. The operation also resulted in the recovery of over $300,000 worth of suspected stolen goods, along with the seizure of a 2021 Ram TRX valued at around $100,000.

Following a significant 25 percent rise in theft incidents at Home Depot locations in Hamilton, police initiated Project Checkout to track down those responsible and disrupt the illegal resale of stolen items.

What started as an investigation into shoplifting quickly uncovered a larger organized scheme. Investigators discovered that groups were stealing valuable tools and construction equipment from Home Depot stores and then selling these items online at prices much lower than retail. In some cases, perpetrators even threatened violence when staff tried to intervene.

Throughout the four-month investigation, law enforcement executed two search warrants at both a commercial site and a residence. They recovered hundreds of suspected stolen tools and other items linked to this theft ring. Additionally, they seized a 2021 Ram TRX believed to be connected to crime activities and valued at about $100,000.

Organized retail theft has impacts that go well beyond just the store itself. Stolen merchandise is frequently resold online, which not only fuels further criminal activity but also increases costs for businesses and consumers alike. By breaking up this network, investigators have managed to recover stolen property, stop further crimes, and eliminate a significant amount of stolen goods from the illegal market.

The Hamilton Police collaborated closely with Home Depot’s Asset Protection Team during this effort; their ongoing partnership and information sharing played a crucial role in achieving successful results from this investigation.
