The partnership being built between Canadian and European Union leaders isn’t just about trade and security; it’s also about teaming up to push back against certain “countries who want a world without rules,” where power dictates what happens, said Kaja Kallas, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, on Thursday.

Kallas shared her thoughts during a discussion with Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anita Anand, at an event related to the 21st EU-Canada Summit in Montreal.

“Frankly, there are countries in the world that want to see a world that is based on whoever has power can take what they want,” said Kallas, who was Estonia’s first female prime minister before taking on her current role with the EU in 2024. “The majority of countries in the world want to see a world that is based on some kind of rules, and there we are looking for like-minded partners.”
