The Canadian government is stepping in to invest in Cohere, participating in a funding round led by Germany’s Schwarz Group, which aims for $7 billion for the Toronto-based AI lab, Cohere announced on Thursday.
This funding round would value Cohere at roughly $36 billion. Schwarz, owner of the Lidl and Kaufland retail chains, committed $780 million to lead the round back in April as part of Cohere’s merger with German AI firm Aleph Alpha.
Cohere stated that these funds will support model development, products tailored for regulated industries, and computing infrastructure.
Prime Minister Mark Carney made this announcement on Thursday while welcoming European Union leaders to Montreal for a summit focused on building stronger connections.
He mentioned that Ottawa plans to invest up to $1.6 billion in Cohere. Other investors involved include Nvidia and BCE’s Bell Canada subsidiary, he noted.
“Cohere will stay Canadian, creating more opportunities for our workers and businesses. Its incorporation and headquarters will remain here,” he said during his speech.
Company Plans $1.7B Infrastructure Investment by 2030
Carney remarked that Canada won’t sit back waiting for the future of artificial intelligence to be decided elsewhere by people Canadians don’t know or trust.
Cohere intends to invest at least $1.7 billion into new computing infrastructure across Canada by 2030, he added.
Cohere CEO Aidan Gomez described the government’s investment as “a huge honour.”

Why slowing the AI race won’t be easy
Silicon Valley tech CEOs are calling for a slow down of artificial intelligence development – but is that even possible? For The National, CBC’s Ashley Fraser looks at what it would take to pace the AI race and why experts say it won’t be easy.
Schwarz, which owned over 20 percent of Aleph Alpha, invested nearly $25 billion on new data centers in Germany. Schwarz Digits CEO Christian Müller stated that the group plans to run Cohere’s models on its STACKIT cloud platform, referring to this investment as a natural progression after the Aleph Alpha deal.
Cohere has only completed an initial close of this funding round and hasn’t disclosed how much has been secured so far or when they expect it will close fully.
The company reported an annual recurring revenue increase of 165 percent year over year as of Q3 and noted their customer base has expanded to 300.
