Essex Town Councillors are set to vote on Monday night about whether to ask the administration to prepare a report on the necessity of new by-laws for e-bikes and e-scooters.
Mayor Sherry Bondy brought up this notice of motion earlier this month. The motion requests that town staff investigate what nearby municipalities are doing and coordinate with the Ontario Provincial Police.
This vote follows reports from La Salle police, who stated they issued 12 charges against riders or their parents over the summer, as well as an incident where Windsor Police charged a 14-year-old for doing wheelies on a minibike on Tecumseh Road East last Thursday.
In August, the Canadian Paediatric Society revealed there were 57 severe injuries linked to e-scooters last year. They also reported ten fatalities among children under 18.
The Canadian Institute for Health Information noted there were 498 hospitalizations related to e-scooters from 2023 to 2024.
In Ontario, riders using e-bikes and e-scooters must be at least 16 years old, and those under 18 are required to wear a helmet.
