Men dealing with prostate issues now have access to a new treatment at Windsor Regional Hospital (WRH).
The hospital has rolled out the Thu LEP (Thulium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate) procedure, aimed at those suffering from an enlarged prostate.
This minimally invasive surgery is meant for patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which is a common issue for older men.
WRH Urologist Dr. Haider Abed noted that this condition is more widespread than many realize.
“If you think about it logically, every man with an enlarged prostate who is experiencing symptoms, such as a weak stream, waking up at night to pee, frequent voiding, or relying on a catheter they cannot get rid of, would qualify for this procedure,” said Abed.
WRH is now one of only three hospitals in Ontario offering this procedure.
The hospital aims to perform 50 Thu LEP procedures in its first year.
