On Monday night, Essex Town Councillors will decide whether to ask the administration to prepare a report on the potential need for new bylaws regulating e-bikes and e-scooters.
Mayor Sherry Bondy brought up this motion earlier this month. It urges town staff to investigate what nearby municipalities are doing regarding these vehicles and collaborate with the Ontario Provincial Police.
This vote follows reports from police in La Salle, where officers issued 12 charges against riders or their parents over the summer. Additionally, Windsor Police charged a 14-year-old for performing wheelies on a minibike on Tecumseh Road East last Thursday.
In August, the Canadian Paediatric Society reported that there were 57 serious injuries tied to e-scooters last year. They also noted ten fatalities among children under 18.
The Canadian Institute for Health Information mentioned that from 2023 to 2024, there were 498 hospitalizations related to e-scooter incidents.
In Ontario, individuals riding e-bikes and e-scooters must be at least 16 years old, and those under 18 are required to wear a helmet.
