(CNN) – President Donald Trump reaffirmed his commitment on Monday to shut down and renovate a public golf course in Washington, DC, stating that construction would start “IMMEDIATELY” despite a judge’s requirement for three days’ notice before any work begins.
Trump shared on Truth Social that the government does not “need an approval” to move forward with the renovations.
“Work is scheduled to begin IMMEDIATELY! The finished product will be World Class, and bring income and great prestige back to D. C.,” he posted.
Earlier on Sunday, the president mentioned that construction was set to kick off next month.
However, his renovation plans are facing legal opposition from preservationists and golfers who want to prevent changes to the public park.
US District Judge Ana C. Reyes, who is overseeing the case, issued an order last week mandating that the government provide at least three days’ notice prior to making any “irreparable modification” to the golf course.
This ruling came after a contentious hearing where she expressed her anger towards the government for removing hundreds of trees without adequate notice. The government argued that these removals were part of routine maintenance unrelated to renovation plans. Reyes instructed that no more trees should be cut down before October 26.
On Friday, the government filed a motion seeking Reyes’ removal from the case, claiming she harbored “disdain for the Trump Administration.” Reyes dismissed this motion and rejected their accusations against her.
In his Monday post on Truth Social, Trump referred to Reyes as a “crazed lunatic.”
The golf course is one of several projects Trump is pursuing in Washington. His intention to transform this public course into a professional one-an undertaking estimated between $20 million and $49 million-has upset many who worry it will eliminate an accessible place for golfing in the capital city.
Another hearing regarding this case is scheduled for later today.
