The province’s police oversight agency is looking into the death of a 48-year-old man during a standoff with police in Whitby on Friday night.
According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Durham police officers went to a home on Macpherson Street to arrest a man who had several outstanding warrants.
The man had interactions with officers both inside and outside the house, where he threatened to hurt himself using an edged weapon, as reported by the SIU.
He then ran back inside and barricaded himself in, according to the SIU.
Eventually, the SIU stated that officers entered the residence and found him unresponsive.
Despite attempts to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the scene, as noted by the SIU.
The agency has assigned three investigators and two forensic experts to this case.
The SIU investigates whenever police actions lead to death, serious injury, sexual assault, or firearm discharge at an individual.
