Peel Regional Police are looking into a reported threat directed at former Mississauga mayor Bonnie Crombie, who is aiming to win back her position in a heated 2026 mayoral race.
On Friday, police informed INSAUGA Canada that Crombie reached out to them on Sept. 21 “making a complaint of threats received on social media. Peel police have started an investigation, which is still ongoing.”
The police did not disclose any additional details regarding the nature of the alleged threat or their investigation.
In an interview with INSAUGA Canada on Friday, Crombie mentioned she was approached and “told to withdraw” from an Oct. 5 mayoral debate set to occur at Mississauga City Hall “or face serious consequences.”
Crombie noted that “I know the individual,” but chose not to reveal the person’s name.
She also mentioned she has recently learned that there may be attempts to cancel the debate itself.
The debate on Oct. 5 is scheduled for 7 p. m. and will be hosted by Policorner, an organization focused on reporting political events and developments at Queen’s Park.
Crombie, along with Mississauga city councillors Alvin Tedjo and Dipika Damerla, have confirmed they will participate while Mayor Carolyn Parrish declined the invitation due to other commitments.
Parrish’s choice not to attend Monday’s debate drew criticism from her three main competitors last week.

The City of Mississauga confirmed to INSAUGA Canada that it received on Oct. 1 “an unfiled Notice of Motion concerning the Mississauga mayoral debate scheduled for Oct. 5.”
A spokesperson for the city would not provide specific details about the notice of motion but stated that “no court date has been set; however, if this motion goes before the court, the city plans to defend it.”
The spokesperson added that “the city isn’t responsible for arranging the Oct. 5 debate but isn’t aware of any changes regarding its continuation.”
The city also refrained from sharing information about who submitted the notice of motion.
“The city cannot disclose any personal or potentially identifying information about the possible applicant at this time. If and when the motion materials are filed with the court, they will become publicly accessible,” said the spokesperson.
Another four-candidate debate planned
The four main candidates for mayor – Parrish, Crombie, Tedjo, and Damerla – have faced off in two debates so far as election night on Oct. 26 approaches.
The recent debate held last night was co-hosted by Food Banks Mississauga and Metamorphosis Network and was particularly intense as rivals Parrish and Crombie exchanged personal attacks.
The third and final debate featuring Parrish will take place on Oct. 15 at Christ First United Church located on Lakeshore Road West. It is organized by multiple local associations including Town of Port Credit Association and Port Credit Community Foundation.
The other three major candidates are also confirmed for that event.
Parrish won a mayoral byelection in June 2024 after succeeding Crombie; both have previously battled in a vigorous municipal campaign leading up to 2026. In September 2011 byelection for Ward 5 council seat, Crombie defeated Parrish (2,479 votes to 2,239 votes).
Crombie stepped down from her role as Mississauga’s mayor in January 2024 after serving a decade in order to lead Ontario’s Liberal Party while attempting to unseat Premier Doug Ford.
The remaining ten candidates running for mayor of Mississauga include:
David Shaw – participated in both the 2024 mayoral byelection and previous municipal election in 2022 as well. Mike Matulewicz – ran during the recent byelection. Amjad Jilani – registered his candidacy on July 14. Frank Fang – entered both races including Ward 9 council seat contest. Fadi Naami – registered his run starting July20. Karam Ahmed – signed up by August20. Aamir Bhatti – completed registration by August21. Gord Elliott – registered his candidacy also by August21. Mohsin Khan – applied starting August18. Ana Luisa Vasquez De Espinal – registered earlier than others by August11.
