St. Thomas police are heavily present in two nearby communities on Friday as part of an ongoing investigation into fraud.
Officers were at sites in Fingal, which is southwest of St. Thomas, and Springfield, located northeast of the city, working on a criminal investigation related to fraud, according to St. Thomas police.
“Officers are on scene at both addresses and are in the process of securing and processing the areas as crime scenes,” police said in a statement.
“There will be an increased police presence in both communities for several hours as the investigation continues.”
There is no threat to public safety, police added.
The OPP stated that the “heavy police presence” in Springfield and Fingal is connected to an incident that took place in St. Thomas and directed all other inquiries to St. Thomas police.
Police did not share more details but mentioned that further information would be provided later.
Investigation Launched After Dog Bite During Disturbance Call
Ontario’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit, is looking into an incident involving a police dog that bit someone who was being sought by authorities in Meaford on Wednesday.
The OPP issued a news release announcing the SIU’s involvement after Grey Bruce OPP responded to a “disturbance” at a residence in Meaford.
A person fled from the location and was found by the OPP canine unit just before 2 a. m.
“During the arrest, the individual was gripped by a police service dog and transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.”
While the SIU investigates, police cannot provide comments, according to the release. Questions directed to the SIU were not immediately answered.
The SIU is an independent government agency tasked with investigating incidents involving police officers that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault or discharge of firearms at individuals.
All SIU investigators are civilians who determine whether any officer has committed a criminal offense and whether charges should follow. The results of investigations are shared publicly.
