A man from Norfolk County recently appeared in court, facing nearly 50 criminal charges stemming from a crime spree that took place mainly in 2024 throughout southern Ontario.

“This might be the largest number of offences I’ve encountered in one sentencing,” stated Justice Elizabeth Wilson while sentencing Travis Anderson.

Anderson, who is 26 years old, was allowed to plead guilty to only 20 offences – with 16 of those occurring in May 2024.

Often seen wearing a blue surgical mask to hide his identity, Anderson stole several vehicles over a year and damaged numerous car and truck windows and doors while attempting to break into them.

One vehicle taken from Norfolk had a tracking device inside it. When police discovered it abandoned, they found DNA evidence linking Anderson to the scene.

He also stole items from cars parked at a factory. When the owner of a Can Am side-by-side caught him trying to wire his utility vehicle, they ended up in a physical altercation.

Many of Anderson’s crimes were committed while he was under an order requiring him to stay at home at all times.

In total, Anderson pleaded guilty to: assault; fleeing from police; possession of stolen property over $5,000; two counts of breaching probation orders; three counts of possessing stolen property; four counts of mischief under $5,000; one count of fraud under $5,000; three counts of theft under $5,000; two counts of theft over $5,000; and two counts of violating release orders.

“He’s spent considerable time behind bars,” noted defence lawyer Ryan Stewart regarding his young client.

“He understands what he’s done and has never claimed he didn’t do something. He’s always accepted responsibility and served his time but now he needs to realize that being incarcerated doesn’t benefit himself or anyone around him.”

Assistant Crown attorney Kirsten Humphrey mentioned that a plea deal provided Anderson “significant credit for settling what could have resulted in multiple trials on 15 sets of charges.”

Anderson expressed remorse before the court and indicated he wants to find a stable job and “move forward.”

Justice Wilson remarked that the man’s guilty pleas were an important factor in her decision-making process. His youth during the offences, difficult upbringing, and Indigenous background were also significant considerations.

However, she emphasized that Anderson’s “reckless, dangerous behaviour” poses ongoing risks both to himself and the community.

The judge concurred with the proposed sentence duration of 18 months-nearly equivalent to standard pre-sentence credit typically given to offenders.

“I believe it will be quite tough once you’re out of custody to fulfill your genuine intentions, but that’s my heartfelt hope for you.”

“It’s vital for the community that you strive for better.”
