The Ontario government is putting nearly $29 million into enhancing and expanding rural water systems in Perth and Wellington counties, as announced by Perth-Wellington MPP Matthew Rae on March 18.
“Across Ontario, our government is investing in our $223-billion plan to build so we can protect Ontario, keep workers on the job, and connect families to the world-class services they rely on,” Premier Doug Ford stated in the release. “Today’s investment will protect homeowners and support the construction of new homes across Perth and Wellington counties. We will continue to work with our municipal partners to build for the future and keep the dream of homeownership alive in Ontario.”
The Municipality of West Perth is set to receive $2,053,125 for the Harry Parrott Herbert Street sewage pumping station in Mitchell, which will help maintain service for about 2,378 homes. This project was announced earlier this year; the municipality noted that this grant covers 73 percent of the total eligible project cost of $2,812,500.
Built in 1983, this pumping station now stands as the oldest part of West Perth’s wastewater system. It serves as the main collection point for wastewater before it’s sent to Mitchell’s treatment plant and supports three quadrants of the community – southeast, southwest, and northwest – including some of its fastest growing residential areas.
West Perth’s chief administrator Dan Hobson mentioned that while they initially planned just for upgrades, thanks to this grant announcement all necessary maintenance and upgrades will be completed.
No specific start date has been set for when work will begin; however, it is expected sometime this year. The tendering process is already underway according to operations director Adam Ryan.
“The Municipality of West Perth is grateful for the Ontario government’s support for this project,” said West Perth Mayor Walter Mc Kenzie in the release. “This much-needed investment will strengthen critical infrastructure and help ensure reliable wastewater services continue for our community.”
“It represents a significant step toward ensuring long-term viability of essential services that support both our current residents and future growth.”
The Township of Perth East will also benefit from $675,250 allocated towards replacing wells in Milverton along with reservoir rehabilitation that will enhance water security for around 850 homes.
“The province’s financial support will allow us to move forward with this project,” commented Perth East Mayor Rhonda Ehgoetz in the release. “We are thankful for ongoing support from both provincial officials and MPP Matthew Rae.”
In Wellington North meanwhile, a significant upgrade plan has been initiated after securing a $26-million grant aimed at both replacing Arthur’s wastewater treatment plant and upgrading Drayton’s sewage pumping station located in Mapleton.
“Our government is making significant long-term investments in rural infrastructure right here in Perth-Wellington,” said Rae. “This nearly $29-million commitment will enhance water systems while improving community assets unlocking new housing opportunities across Wellington and Perth counties which supports economic growth while ensuring we protect our communities for generations ahead.”
Since 2024, there has been almost $150 million invested by the government into both Perth and Wellington counties via programs like Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program alongside Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund representing one of history’s largest commitments toward infrastructure within these regions.
