Good news has come for residents of the Greater Toronto Area as air quality warnings have been lifted after days filled with wildfire smoke that kept many people indoors and impacted outdoor activities across southern Ontario.
Environment Canada has announced that the air quality warnings for Mississauga, Brampton, Halton, and Hamilton are no longer in effect as conditions continue to get better.
Toronto and Durham Region also saw their warnings removed on Saturday as the smoke began to dissipate. By Sunday afternoon, the Air Quality Health Index was at 2 (Low Risk), making it a great time for outdoor activities.
This improvement follows a week of worsening air quality caused by smoke blowing south from wildfires happening in northwestern Ontario.
During the peak of this situation on Wednesday, Toronto was reported to have the worst air quality worldwide by IQAir, with smoke covering much of southern Ontario.
The smoky atmosphere disrupted everyday life throughout the GTA. Many municipalities had to cancel or change outdoor programs and temporarily closed some outdoor pools and recreational activities.

In Mississauga and Brampton, several public health clinics also had to close briefly due to the poor air quality.
Even though air quality has improved a lot, Environment Canada warns that conditions can shift quickly based on wildfire activity and changing winds.
The forecast indicates a moderate risk (AQHI 4) for Sunday afternoon before dropping back down to low risk in the evening. Moderate risk levels are expected again on Monday.
