The Wellington Gateway Rapid Transit project in London has reached its final construction stage, focusing on the last segment of Wellington Road.
Phase 2B includes the section of Wellington Road from Watson Street to just south of Base Line Road East. The plans involve widening the road, adding two transit lanes in the center, building transit stations, and upgrading underground utilities.
Work on this final phase is expected to carry on until 2029, with some restoration efforts continuing into 2030.
Beginning Aug. 31, one lane in each direction will be closed between Frank Place and Wellington Court as crews set up temporary roads and traffic controls. Enbridge Gas is also relocating its gas lines for the project, which will lead to occasional lane closures.
The work scheduled for 2026 and 2027 will focus north of Whetter Avenue, with construction anticipated to progress south toward Base Line Road East by late 2027.
Access to Victoria Hospital, local businesses, and residences will remain open. Pedestrian access will be available on at least one side of Wellington Road while the city works with the hospital to ensure emergency services can reach it easily.
Additionally, other parts of the Wellington Gateway project are close to completion.
Clark’s Bridge has been expanded between Grand Avenue and South Street, now featuring two vehicle lanes along with dedicated transit lanes and a multi-use path for pedestrians and cyclists. This summer saw the completion of asphalt work, red transit-lane markings, and permanent pavement markings; landscaping and final touches will continue through 2026.
Phase 3 of Wellington Gateway has been paved between Wilkins Street and Harlech Gate; centre-running transit lanes have been painted alongside new traffic signals and shelters. Remaining tasks include constructing stations, landscaping efforts, cleanup duties, and restoration work.
Phase 4 is also nearing its finish line between Harlech Gate and the entrance to Wellington Commons. The underground infrastructure is complete while teams are still working on transit stations, traffic lights, multi-use paths, landscaping efforts, asphalt laying, and red centre-running transit lanes.
Construction continues for Phase 2A located between Wilkins Street and Base Line Road East; this includes both underground utility work as well as road widening needed for new transit lanes.
