TORONTO — The Blue Jays managed to grab a win in their series against the Tigers, but they’ve got a tough road ahead.
Wednesday afternoon’s 5-1 victory at Rogers Centre puts the Blue Jays (76-77) 1 1/2 games behind the last AL Wild Card spot, currently occupied by the White Sox (77-75). The Rangers (76-76) sit half a game ahead of Toronto and will face them for an important series in Arlington starting on Friday.
“We’ll try to go 1-0 every day,” manager John Schneider said, sticking with his usual mantra. “That’s it. It’s going to be another tough series. Tomorrow will be a good off-day for everyone, but every day and every series is going to be challenging and really crucial.”
This is what stood out from Wednesday’s win and the tight Wild Card race:
1. A fresh look at the AL Wild Card picture
The shift at the top of the AL Central is key for the Blue Jays and their playoff dreams. The Guardians now lead the Central division, pushing the White Sox back into the Wild Card hunt in that final position.
The White Sox kick off a four-game series against the Tigers on Thursday at home. After their first game in that series, both Chicago and Toronto will have nine games left to play, allowing us to assess things more clearly again. However, what really matters here is the tiebreaker.
Chicago holds the tiebreaker over Toronto, which alters how this plays out. Previously, Toronto had it over Cleveland which meant even tying for third place in Wild Card would have been enough; that’s no longer true if they’re chasing Chicago now. Texas is also very much in this mix now, and unfortunately for Toronto, they don’t hold any tiebreakers there either.
The bottom line? The Blue Jays can’t just slip into this anymore. Time’s running out fast, and with such a lackluster AL Wild Card race right now, they can’t rely on anything but winning straight up. Their only way into October baseball is to make a serious push.
2. Scherzer keeps hope alive
Max Scherzer takes on these critical roles because he needs to step up for the team right now. With injuries taking a toll on this rotation, his 6.38 ERA coming into Wednesday didn’t carry much weight. What mattered was that they needed this future Hall of Famer to give them a shot-and that’s exactly what he did.
Scherzer’s velocity wasn’t quite up to par with his past norms and his control was shaky too; however, that didn’t affect him significantly either. The 42-year-old managed to keep the Tigers at bay long enough for Toronto’s offense to get going during middle innings-a solid outing given everything going on around him.
“We have work to do,” Scherzer stated. “It takes all of us-not just our starters but also our bullpen and hitters too. We need wins; we’re backed against a wall right now so we’ve got to come out swinging hard and find ways to win.”
Pushing through five innings while allowing just one run was essential as well considering how fatigued Toronto’s bullpen has become lately. An off-day tomorrow comes as welcome relief before facing Dylan Cease and José Soriano in their initial two games against Texas on Friday and Saturday-another bold move as they aim high during these final opportunities.
3. Offense delivers enough hits
The best part of Toronto’s offense came from some pretty poor defense by Detroit at times; however before those blunders happened in inning six, there were moments of timely hitting from Toronto too.
Myles Straw-hitting ninth-had one of those pivotal swings when he delivered an RBI single during inning four; he’s showing he deserves regular time in lineup as long as matchups allow down this stretch.

Anything can happen since there’s plenty of baseball left.” If Toronto truly wants success moving forward-which they’re desperate for-they need more power hitting wise as well! They can pull off narrow wins like 2-1 or 4-2 easily enough yet if pitching falters again they’ll need slugging ability badly-something they’ve struggled with throughout 2026 season thus far.
