A recent winter forecast has shared what this season will look like across Canada.
Get ready for “intense” cold, heavy lake-effect snow, ice storms, and more as Ontario turns into a winter battleground.
The Canadian winter forecast from the Farmer’s Almanac states that this winter will be “a season of dramatic contrasts.”
This includes frequent snowstorms, lake-effect snow, freezing rain, and ice in Ontario.
The Farmer’s Almanac notes that southern Ontario is set to be one of the busiest areas for winter weather this season.
This is due to cold northwest winds predicted to sweep over the warmer waters of the Great Lakes, leading to “intense” bands of lake-effect snow. Residents in snowbelt communities east and southeast of the Great Lakes should stay vigilant for localized heavy snowfall.
<p Big storms coming from the southwest are expected to bring widespread snow, sleet, freezing rain or rain to southern Ontario this winter, according to the Farmer's Almanac.
These storms may impact Toronto, Hamilton, London, Windsor, Ottawa and other regions when temperatures hover around 0 C. So while one storm might mainly bring snow, another could start with snow before shifting to freezing rain or rain and then flash-freezing.
You can anticipate frequent cycles of freeze and thaw with mixed precipitation in southern Ontario.
Additionally, there’s a chance of ice storms stretching from Kingston to Ottawa throughout the winter season.
Northern Ontario areas like Thunder Bay, Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie and Timmins are expected to experience a more consistently wintry pattern compared to the south this season. These regions are likely to face “intense” cold as well.
A chilly and snowy winter is predicted for communities further north including Kapuskasing, Cochrane and Moosonee based on information from the Farmer’s Almanac.
