Mrs. Lisa Giesel, age 99, passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospice surrounded by family on September 10, 2026. She was born on August 30, 1927, in Estonia. In 1944, she moved to Germany where she married her late husband, Heinz Giesel, and raised her children: Doris and Peter. In 1963, she immigrated to Canada with her family and made Dryden, Ontario their home.
Lisa supported her family through a career in hospitality. She had a strong desire to help others and spent time bringing the community together. Lisa took part in programs through Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Dryden, delivered meals for Meals on Wheels, and engaged in the Friendly Visiting programs at the Dryden Regional Health Centre. She dedicated herself to assisting new immigrants as they learned English and volunteered on the committee that organized multicultural festivals in Dryden.
Lisa loved exploring the beautiful outdoors of northern Ontario. She enjoyed long walks, snowshoeing, and skiing. Fishing was another passion of hers; she was also known for her stunning garden and was an expert knitter. Most importantly, Lisa treasured time spent with her grandchildren. Alongside her late husband, she taught them how to fish and where to find the best blueberries. Those outdoor moments filled with nature are memories they will hold dear forever.
Lisa is survived by both of her children: Doris (Jerry) and Peter (Cindy); her grandchildren Andrew, Madeline (Chris), Hannah (Mark), Abigail, Phebe (Oliver); as well as her great-grandchildren Garrett, Eliza, Felicity, Josie, and Evelyn.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to her medical team: Dr. Sarah Facca, Dr. Christopher Lai, Dr. Andrew Migay, and Dr. Nelson for their outstanding care. They also wish to thank Madonna and Peter from Hospice Northwest; their companionship meant so much to Lisa and her family.
A celebration of life will take place on what would have been her 100th birthday next year on August 30, 2027. If desired, donations can be made to Hospice Northwest instead of flowers.
