Police services in Sarnia-Lambton are reminding drivers to be cautious as students head back to school.
Sarnia Police Service (SPS) Community Engagement Officer Cst. Nick Mc Lean mentioned that not stopping for a school bus or crossing guard could lead to serious fines.
“If you fail to stop for a school bus when the overhead red signal lights are flashing, a police officer can give you a ticket for $490 and six demerit points. If you fail to stop for a crossing guard displaying a school crossing stop sign, a police officer can give you a ticket for $365 and four demerit points, and the fines increase if it is in a community safety zone.”
Mc Lean emphasized that more importantly, ignoring traffic rules could cause an accident, which might affect the lives of everyone involved.
As a father himself, Mc Lean understands that kids can get distracted and sometimes step onto the road.
“Ultimately, drivers need to be aware of their surroundings and remain alert,” he said. “So they’re prepared and ready to stop if something unexpected happens.”
Parents and guardians are also encouraged to speak with their children about road safety while they wait for the bus or walk or bike to school.
Mc Lean suggested that people who see traffic violations should report them to the SPS by either calling or submitting an online tip.
Meanwhile, Lambton OPP will be increasing patrols in school zones and along bus routes during this back-to-school period.
With similar advice for both motorists and students, OPP reminded kids to stay seated on the bus while it’s moving and encouraged biking students to wear their helmets.
