Police services in Sarnia-Lambton are reminding drivers to be extra careful as kids head back to school.
Sarnia Police Service (SPS) Community Engagement Officer Cst. Nick Mc Lean mentioned that not stopping for a school bus or crossing guard can lead to serious fines.
“If you fail to stop for a school bus when the overhead red signal lights are flashing, a police officer can give you a ticket for $490 and six demerit points. If you fail to stop for a crossing guard displaying a school crossing stop sign, a police officer can give you a ticket for $365 and four demerit points, and the fines increase if it is in a community safety zone.”
Mc Lean emphasized that more importantly, ignoring road rules could lead to an accident, which could affect everyone involved.
As a father himself, Mc Lean understands that kids can get distracted and may step onto the road unexpectedly.
“Ultimately, drivers need to be aware of their surroundings and remain alert,” he said. “So they’re prepared and ready to stop if something unexpected happens.”
Parents and guardians should also take time to talk with their children about staying safe while waiting for the bus or walking or biking to school.
Mc Lean encouraged anyone who sees traffic violations to report them to the SPS by calling or sending in an online tip.
Meanwhile, Lambton OPP will be stepping up patrols in school zones and along bus routes during this busy season.
The OPP also reminded both motorists and students that kids should stay seated while on the bus, and those biking should always wear their helmets.
