Chatham-Kent police are urging drivers to stop for school buses as students head back to school on Tuesday.
Police announced they will be carrying out enforcement and education programs along school bus routes throughout Chatham-Kent starting Tuesday.
Officers will keep an eye on traffic in areas where school buses commonly operate to ensure drivers follow the rules and help create a safe environment for students traveling to and from school, according to police.
Drivers should remember that it’s against the law to pass a stopped school bus when its overhead red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended.
Additionally, drivers approaching a stopped school bus from either direction on undivided roads must stop and stay stopped until the bus begins moving again or the signals turn off.
Police also mentioned that extra caution should be taken in school zones and residential areas, especially right before and after school, as students might cross the road unexpectedly or run out from between parked cars.
The police encourage everyone to slow down and stay alert.
“School bus safety is a shared responsibility. Every driver has a role in protecting children and ensuring they arrive safely at school and return home at the end of the day,” police noted.
