Chatham-Kent police are reminding drivers to stop for school buses as students head back to school on Tuesday.

Police announced that they will be implementing enforcement and educational efforts along school bus routes throughout Chatham-Kent starting Tuesday.

Officers will keep an eye on traffic in areas where school buses are often found to make sure drivers are following the rules and to help maintain a safe environment for students traveling to and from school, according to police.

Drivers should remember that it’s against the law to pass a stopped school bus with its overhead red lights flashing and stop arm extended.

Additionally, drivers approaching a halted school bus from either direction on roads without a physical median must stop and stay stopped until the bus starts moving again or the signals turn off.

Police mentioned that extra caution should be taken in school zones and residential areas, especially just before and after school since students might cross the street unexpectedly or rush out from behind parked cars.

Everyone is encouraged to slow down and remain alert.

“School bus safety is a shared responsibility. Every driver has a role in protecting children and ensuring they arrive safely at school and return home at the end of the day,” police noted.
