It seems Danielle Smith isn’t backing down.
These days, she’s doubling and tripling her efforts. In this intense game of political poker, the Alberta premier isn’t folding her hand.
When you’ve been labeled a traitor for over a year and still stand strong, it’s likely not in your plans to back off.
There are plenty of voices across Canada insisting on slapping a tax on Alberta oil heading south or at least considering it as a serious option.
They believe such an action would really show the Americans and President Trump who’s in charge.
Smith warns to be cautious about what you wish for.
“It would be devastating. It would be devastating because of the counterattack that would happen,” says the premier, maintaining her stance.
“If we put a 50 percent tariff on oil and gas leaving Alberta and the U. S. administration imposed a 50 percent to 100 percent tariff on oil and gas coming into Ontario and Quebec, that would wipe out their economies.”
“You’d run out of aviation fuel at Toronto’s Pearson airport within a week, and everyone would end up working from home because there wouldn’t be gasoline or diesel available.”
Smith definitely sounds charged up.
“I don’t want that to happen. I’m trying to prevent Canada from doing something so foolish because I know what the consequences would be.”</
“I understand everyone likes thinking we’ve got some sort of checkmate here but in today’s world where every country can source resources from multiple places, Canada succeeds by being a trustworthy partner-not by turning politics into games with oil.”

The statement goes: “The reason Albertans are so angry is that Justin Trudeau tried to shut down our energy sector just like people in Ontario and Quebec are upset right now because Trump is attempting to close their auto and steel industries. The feelings are exactly alike.” Despite all critics who dislike Smith, recent figures from respected analysts at Leger indicate she and her UCP have gained 10 points over Naheed Nenshi’s NDP party. Meanwhile echoing other surveys suggests those pushing for Alberta independence-some who label Smith as treasonous-might need more effort ahead. If calculations are anywhere close accurate-they’re trailing behind by roughly 40 percentage points against those wanting to stay in Canada-and aren’t making progress in major cities like Calgary or Edmonton either.
