David passed away on August 17, 2026. He was born on January 14, 1945. His life had many interesting chapters. Born as John Michael Vincent Lahti (Mikey) to Lillian Cormer, he was adopted at just 11 months by Helen and Michael Rusnak due to the conditions of wartime. Lillian had a total of 11 children; while Jewel, Ralph, Billy, Chuck, and Aileen have passed away, Barbara, Len, Sandra, Debbie, and Gordie still celebrate their bond with David.

David shared a wonderful marriage with Margaret Kartanson for 56 years starting from September 4, 1970. Together they raised three children: Heather, Jeffrey (Jodi), and Kevin (Beth). They were blessed with ten grandchildren: Paul (Gabby), Eric, Jaymie (Gage), Nathan (Anna), Noah, Nevaeh in Thunder Bay; Scotia, Evan, Hunter, Connor in Gibbons, Alberta; along with three great-grandchildren: Lucy, Briar, and Miller Bechard in Thunder Bay.

His working journey began from 1964 to 1968 as an able seaman on the HMCS Restigouche. After his navy service ended, he worked at Ontario Hospital as a Psychiatric Nursing Assistant before spending fifteen years as a welder at the shipyards. He then moved into sales for welding equipment at BOC and Praxair before retiring.

David loved spending time outdoors with his family and extended family during many summer camping trips throughout the region. He was also an avid fan of both the Blue Jays and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to Ontario Health at Home, Community Care Partners staff members including Nursing Staff at VON and Paramed services. They also wish to extend love and gratitude to everyone at Manor House’s 2 North and 5 South Hogarth who provided incredible support for David and Margaret over the past five months.

In accordance with David’s wishes there will not be a funeral service; instead family will gather later for remembrance.

Condolences can be sent through www. nwfainc. com
