A 73-year-old woman from London has passed away in the hospital nearly a week after being stabbed at her home in south London.

According to London police, officers were dispatched to a residence near Wellington Road and Raywood Avenue just after 6 a. m. on August 22. The woman was awakened by a loud sound and found an intruder entering her home.

She was attacked and stabbed before she managed to call for help, police stated. Officers mentioned that the woman and the attacker were not previously acquainted.

The victim was initially taken to the hospital with injuries that were serious but not life-threatening; however, she later succumbed to her wounds.

Authorities have classified her death as a homicide.

Police said they were called to a home in the area of Wellington Road and Raywood Avenue just after 6 a. m. on Aug. 22, after a woman was stabbed inside her residence. (Kendra Seguin/)

Residents on Raywood Avenue shared that they believe the woman lived alone in the corner house next to Wellington Road. On Friday, part of the front window at 10 Raywood Ave. had plywood covering it, and a single light flickered inside.

Property records indicate that Lillian Anne Leonard purchased the house back in 1998.

Steve Walker, who resides in the neighborhood, mentioned he didn’t know the woman personally but felt disturbed by her death.

“It’s really scary. I think she was an older woman living here by herself and it’s horrible,” he said.

Walker commented that usually, it’s a quiet neighborhood where families stroll with their children heading off to school nearby. He noted that this incident along with increased police activity feels out of place.

“It feels very random which is still scary because.. you’re more paranoid,” Walker said.

Nelson Enrique Cornejo, aged 40 from London, has been charged with second degree murder along with previous charges including aggravated assault, breaking and entering with intent, assaulting an officer with a weapon, and obstructing an officer.

Cornejo is currently in custody and is set to appear again in court on August 31 in London.

The investigation by London police is ongoing.

If anyone has information regarding Cornejo or any interactions they’ve had with him, they are encouraged to contact London police at 519-661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
