The province is aiming for clearer information on recycling costs and is looking into future solutions for hard-to-recycle plastics.
The Ontario government is suggesting updates to the Blue Box recycling program across the province. The aim is to enhance transparency, boost accountability, and help manage costs for businesses.
Proposed changes in legislation would enable the province to oversee contracts between producer responsibility organizations and businesses that pay for recycling services. This should lead to more consistent fees and clearer reporting on costs associated with the program.
Ontario is also reaching out to the public and those in the recycling industry about possible updates to service requirements for recycling carts and bins, along with future collection methods for difficult-to-recycle flexible plastics.
The province is considering appointing an independent administrator to replace the current program administrator.
Ontario’s Blue Box program supports over five million households. Producers such as brand owners, importers, and retailers are responsible for funding and managing these recycling services.
The proposed changes do not indicate any immediate adjustments to recycling collection in Kingston.
