An apartment complex located just southwest of a sealed-off area on Simcoe Street in Oshawa was left with numerous bullet holes late Monday night after police got “multiple reports” of gunshots.
Durham Regional Police arrived at the scene near Centre Street and Hall Street, south of the train tracks, around 11:45 p. m. Monday. Officers found several shell casings outside the building’s front entrance.
According to witnesses, a dark sedan sped away right after the shots were fired. Police confirmed that this vehicle was stolen from Toronto and has since been recovered.
Investigators found that both the front door and side windows of the building had been hit by gunfire, causing property damage.
Images circulating on social media display at least 14 bullet holes visible in the front entrance of the building.
No injuries have been reported to law enforcement so far.
The investigation is still ongoing.
A resident expressed concerns on social media about safety for people walking through their neighborhood.
“How much more are residents expected to accept,” asked Bea W., “before we start seeing meaningful action?”
No suspects have been identified at this time.
If anyone has information regarding this incident, including dash cam or security footage, they are encouraged to reach out to investigators at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1705.
The following evening, a man crashed his car into a light pole just a few blocks away in Oshawa on Tuesday night. He was later charged with impaired driving.
With Simcoe Street closed off at the CPKC bridge since January, traffic issues have plagued the area and it has also become a hub for the city’s homeless population. Now there’s been a shooting as well.
The road closure for bridge reconstruction is set to last another 15 months at least.
