As many local government leaders gather in Ottawa this month for the annual Association of Municipalities of Ontario conference, Grey County Warden Andrea Matrosovs is ready to promote regional concerns on a provincial level.
Taking place from August 16 to 19, this important event serves as a key platform where municipal officials work together with federal and provincial policymakers to tackle urgent community issues and explore new possibilities.
This year’s busy agenda features Ontario Premier Doug Ford, AMO President Robin Jones, Lieutenant Governor Edith Dumont, and Federation of Canadian Municipalities President Tim Tierney leading discussions on crucial topics such as resilient infrastructure, municipal finance, local governance, emergency preparedness, Indigenous reconciliation, modernization through artificial intelligence, and regional economic development.
Aside from the main conference events, Warden Matrosovs and the Grey County team are taking advantage of their direct access to provincial decision-makers through two specific ministerial delegations. Their first important meeting is set with the Ministry of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security to push for ongoing financial support for rural-focused higher education institutions like Georgian College in Owen Sound. Serving as a foundation for regional workforce growth, the Owen Sound campus fosters economic progress by training experts in skilled trades, healthcare, clean energy, and marine transportation. Thus, continuous provincial investment is vital for long-term regional success.
In their second planned delegation, County representatives will engage with the Ministry of Education to discuss pressing local challenges within the childcare sector under the Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care program. Grey County is urging the province to approve more CWELCC-funded spaces to ease serious shortages and broaden licensed childcare access for families across the region. Additionally, they will advocate for revising current income limits tied to fee subsidies so that hard-working middle-income families earning below the local living wage receive much-needed financial support.
Alongside these main advocacy efforts, Warden Matrosovs will also take part in high-level strategic talks and events through her involvement with both the Western Ontario Wardens Caucus and the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative. This helps strengthen Grey County’s collaborative voice in national discussions.
