July kicked off with high temperatures – the average for the first two weeks was nearly 30 C – but then things cooled down, resulting in an overall monthly temperature just one degree above normal, according to the latest report from the University of Waterloo weather station.

The report highlights that July 14 was the hottest day, reaching a sweltering 34.2 C.

While there weren’t many rainy days, the total rainfall matched what we’ve seen in previous years, as mentioned in the report.

“There were only seven days of precipitation during July; this is the least since 2001,” stated the report.

However, two “really wet days” compensated for that: July 9 had 23.2 mm of rain, while July 21 saw a hefty 47.4 mm fall, totaling up to 77.6 mm.

This amount was “only a bit below the average of 83.7 mm and within the average range.”

“Even though this month was less than average, total precipitation so far in 2026 has reached 601 mm, which is above the average of 509 mm,” noted the report.

The report does not cover air quality issues faced in July. Smoke from wildfires in northern Ontario settled over the region, causing yellow and hazy skies for several days.

Environment and Climate Change Canada issued an orange level air quality warning mid-month. The Air Quality Ontario website indicated that both Kitchener and Guelph were at times rated at “very high risk” during those alerts.
