Seven U. S. Senators from both the Republican and Democratic parties have released a statement urging President Donald Trump to “immediately reverse course” on his plan to ease sanctions and buy diesel from Russia as part of his initiative to reduce fuel costs for Americans, according to the Associated Press.

This bipartisan group emphasized that Congress had previously enacted a ban on all energy imports from Russia following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, aiming to “prevent American dollars from financing Putin’s brutal war against Ukraine.”

“Congress was clear: the U. S. should not import oil from Russia until it stops its aggression against Ukraine and halts threats toward our NATO allies,” the senators noted regarding the sanctions on Russian energy.

“President Trump’s choice to allow Russian diesel imports into the U. S. directly contradicts that law,” they pointed out while referencing U. S. sanctions on Russian energy.

In their statement, the senators claimed that Trump’s administration “failed to consult with Congress or provide any justification for its decision as required by law.”

“The United States shouldn’t give Putin a financial boost while Russia continues harming Ukrainian civilians. The Administration needs to reverse course immediately,” they wrote.

Republican Senators Question Legality of Trump’s Agreement with Putin

On Friday, Trump announced that Putin had agreed to “immediately supply” over 300,000 tons of diesel to global energy markets, with an additional 500,000 tons expected by November.

Republican Senators Thom Tillis of North Carolina, along with Senators Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and John Curtis of Utah stated in their remarks that this agreement with Russia could have “deadly consequences” by giving Vladimir Putin any impression that we’re going to slow down instead of speeding up efforts to end this conflict and secure peace in Europe.

Tillis told NBC’s Meet the Press that he believes there are valid grounds for arguing Trump didn’t adhere to the law if this deal with Russia proceeds.

“We were very clear that Russia is the aggressor. It’s Russia who can put an end to this war by withdrawing from occupied territories,” Tillis said.

Diesel Agreement Comes After Bill Aimed at Further Isolating Russian Energy Market

In September, Congress passed a bipartisan bill led by the late Senator Lindsey Graham imposing strict sanctions on countries importing energy from Russia.

Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming remarked, “The president is trying to balance tough decisions… This is just another piece of leverage for him against Putin in pursuit of a long-term resolution in that region,” during an interview with CBS’s Face the Nation.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended Trump’s actions as being within his legal rights as president when negotiating this agreement with Russia.

“President Trump took office with a mission focused on serving the American people, and this move benefits them,” he stated in an interview with Fox News.

Richard Nephew, a senior research scholar at Columbia University’s Center on Global Energy Policy commented for the Associated Press that under this deal, the total quantity of diesel released by Russia would be less than what is consumed daily in America.

Trump has recently blamed rising diesel prices on Ukrainian strikes aimed at Russian energy facilities.

“Ukrainian attacks are worsening diesel shortages and impacting farmers here in America,” he mentioned.

On Sunday, Trump asserted that Ukraine and Russia had come to an agreement on an “energy ceasefire.” However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told Axios that such a ceasefire “was news for me.”Source link
